Tunisia just got rid of a 44 years old ban on Muslim woman marrying non muslim men as the president of Tunisia wants to secure equal rights for the woman of the country.
A spokeswoman for President “ Beji Caid Essebsi” named “Saida Garrach” congratulated women of Tunisia and wrote on Facebook “Congratulations to the women of Tunisia for the enshrinement of the right to the freedom to choose one’s spouse”.
Until now any non-Muslim man who wanted to marry a Muslim Tunisian woman had to convert to Islam and submit a certificate of his conversion as proof.
Tunisia is viewed as being ahead of most Arab countries on women’s rights and have a nearly 99% muslim population.
Human rights groups in the North African country had campaigned for the ban’s abolition, saying it undermined the fundamental human right to choose a spouse.
