Afghans used to rule in Kashmir once and their rule were one of the darkest phases of Kashmir. When Birbal Dhar brought the Sikh and Rajput (Dogra) Army in Kashmir to throw away Afghans, thousands of them stayed back. Post Partition 10,000 Afghans received the nod from then Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru to stay and become the citizen of Jammu and Kashmir. In 1989, USSR pulled out its troops from Afghanistan and tens of thousands of Taliban and other Sunni Islamists moved towards Kashmir only to face a humiliating defeat from the hands of Indian Defence Forces.
United States of America invaded Afghanistan in 2001 along with NATO countries to defeat Taliban and other Sunni Islamist Terrorist organizations and till this day the ‘War on Terror’ is going on. Afghanistan is making a little progress towards normalcy but one thing that you need to know is that Afghanistan was once a Modern and prosperous nation. Women’s had rights and weren’t forced to hide under ‘Burkhas’.
Dr. Bill Podlich who was a University Teacher, captured this unbelievable phase of Afghanistan when he traveled to Afghanistan in 1967 with his wife, Margaret, and Jan and Peg, their two teenage daughters.
When I look at my dad’s photos, I remember Afghanistan as a country with thousands of years of history and culture,” Dr. Podlich’s daughter Peg, who attended the American International School of Kabul, told the Denver Post. “It has been a gut-wrenching experience to watch and hear about the profound suffering which has occurred in Afghanistan during the battles of war for nearly 40 years. Fierce and proud yet fun loving people have been beaten down by terrible forces.”
Thanks to the Collection of Dr. Bill Podlich’s, which is now managed by his son-in-law Clayton Esterson that we came to know about this phase of Afghanistan.
